Short summary

Using science and math skills, students work cooperatively in groups as they participate in a lunch recycling program. They will learn about such topics as recycling various composting, decomposition, the life cycle and will use the scientific method to pose and test hypothesis related to worms and decomposition.

Goals of the project

Students will participate in a school wide lunch recycling program.
Students will learn about recycling, decomposition, and the life cycle.
Students will use the scientific method to pose and test hypothesis related to worms and decomposition.
Students will present their findings in a variety of formats: graphically, pictorially and verbally.

Applicability to the  teaching of science...
Students should learn science in ways that reflect the inquiry used by scientists to understand the natural world. Project W.O.R.M. will help children develop an understanding that is useful and relevant by placing scientific ideas in a real world context. During the program students will ask a scientific question, plan and construct an investigation, use data to construct an explanation, and communicate the results to others. They will also utilize a variety of math skills...weighing, measuring, and computing. The interactive software and on-line programs will give students the opportunity to analyze and discuss scientific concepts, perform hands-on experiments, and work cooperatively in groups.
How will students be  directly impacted by  the grant ?  Vermicomposting can be a realistic way for children to become involved with the issues of solid waste management. In Project W.O.R.M. leftovers from children's lunches will become dinner for worms, teaching students that waste can be a resource and even the lowest of creatures, the worm, can make a difference. Recycling the organic waste of the school lunch program into compost will allow our school to return badly needed organic matter to the soil in our school garden area. In this way, students will participate in nature's cycle and cut down on garbage going into landfills.
How will you evaluate   the accomplishment of   your goals ...   The learner outcomes (knowledge, feelings, and skills) will be measured in several different ways...testing, observations, and projects. A pretest will be administered at the beginning of the program to help determine prior knowledge. There will also be ongoing evaluations (activities, centers, games, journal writing, skill sheets, and on-line computer programs) as students practice and demonstrate their understanding of recycling and composting. Project W.O.R.M. will provide opportunities for students to reason, explore and communicate mathematically, while interacting cooperatively. Students will, hopefully, develop positive attitudes toward science and math while enjoying the challenges provided.

Timeline for grant  completion

The unit will be taught during the 2000-2001 school year. Various grade levels will be utilizing the worm bin and materials at different times.
